Time to Pray?
Actors : 2 characters, 1 is a normal everyday working person, the other character
represents God - although this is not specifically said until the end, it becomes
evident during the course of the drama. The man does not necessarily need to look
at God when he talks to him.
Setting: There is a single chair on the stage, and props offstage including A box
of cereal, A coffee mug, A newspaper and sandwich, A manila folder with a bunch
of papers in it, A remote control, and A toothbrush.
(The character representing God is standing centre stage, there is a chair to his
left. He stays on stage during the entire drama)
Man: (Walks toward 'God' while holding his cereal, he is reading the box and looks
at 'God') Um..... I know I usually have time to speak, but.... um... (looks at
watch) I'm a bit rushed this morning... I slept in...... can... can we talk later?....
umm.... maybe morning tea?
God: OK - I'll be waiting to hear from you.
Man: Good. (exits)
-----------------------------------------------
Man: (Enters again, rushes past 'God' with a cup of coffee in hand and stops....)
Oh!....that's right..... (embarrassed) we were going to......to..... You see I've
got stacks of work on at the moment,.... I don't know how I'm gonna get this report
done on time.... can we leave it 'til a bit later?
God: Sure, I'll be waiting.
(man exits)
-----------------------------------------------
Man: (Enters again, with a newspaper & sandwich, sits down on the chair and begins
eating and reading newspaper. 'God' is now standing behind the chair. The man with
his back to 'God' continues to read & eat. Suddenly he stops eating and lifts his
head up as if trying to remember something, after a short pause he shrugs and continues reading
and eating. He finishes, stand up and walks off stage again)
-----------------------------------------------
Man: (Enters again, he rushes in looking worried with a folder of papers in hand.
This time he sees 'God' and realizes that he hasn't yet spoken to Him. - 'God'
is standing with the chair on his left again. As he sees 'God' the realisation is
evident on the mans face but he feels a little awkward...) Oh........ I'm sorry,.... I forgot
again....and well.... now's not a really good time for me......(dejected) I.... I've
just come from a meeting... I said some things I shouldn't have and......
God: Would you like to tell me about it?
Man: You know..... I..... I kinda' don't feel like talking at the moment. Maybe...
when I get home....
God: I'll be waiting.
(Man exits)
-----------------------------------------------
Man: (Enters again, with TV remote. 'God' is standing behind the chair again. The
man sits down in the chair, facing the audience and his imaginary TV, clicking the
remote control. 'God' walks around in front of the man, standing with his back to
the audience, in between the Man and his imaginary TV. After a few seconds the man leans across
to his left and then his right, trying to see the 'TV' oblivious to 'God's' presence.
'God' walks back around behind the chair and the Man watches TV for a short while
then gets up and exits again)
-----------------------------------------------
Man: (Enters again, this time with toothbrush this time sees 'God' who is still standing
by the chair) I...ah..... I forgot to talk ... to you, didn't I..... It's just...
It's just been a really bad day for me......
God: I wish you'd talked to me about it.
Man: (pauses and thinks).... You know,.... (yawns) I'm pretty tired,... and....It's
getting late......... I'll definitely pray tomorrow.
God: I'll be waiting.
