Characters
: A friendly, concerned doctor, and a patient who means well but sometimes says the
right things instead of the real things.
Setting:
A doctors office. The doctor is wearing a white coat possibly with a stethoscope
and also a 'innerscope' - a device for viewing inside a person.
Doc: (welcomes his patient in) Ahhhhh (looks at clipboard) Christian, come on in.
Christian: Thanks Doc.
Doc: Now your here for a checkup... right?
Christian: Yeah, my pastor suggested I come to you... I feel fine though.... well
except when I do this (bends elbow).
Doctor: When you you do what?
Christian: When I do this (does it again)
Doc: I see...... well (in an obvious tone) ..... don't do that...... But that's not
why you're here. You see I'm not so much concerned about your physical well being
- although that's important, I'm more interested about what's going on inside.
Christian: Inside.... like my bones and stuff?
Doc: Well, not exactly.... (picks up medical instrument) You see with this new 'innerscope'
I can see what's going on inside your body - what your thinking and feeling.
Christian: (looking at instrument) I... I don't think I could swallow that.....
Doc: No, and I'd prefer it if you didn't - it's very expensive! You see all I do
is hold it close to your body and we'll start to get a picture on the screen (points
to multi-media screen) over there.
Christian: What.... you just hold it there and It'll show what I'm thinking...
Doc: That's right... hold still and I'll turn it on - It takes a little while to give
us a clear picture of what's going on inside (hold it up near patients head)
PROJECTION silhouette of head on screen.... a thorn-bush rolls past the screen)
Christian: I gotta warn you there's a lot going on in there!
Doc: Yes.... perhaps we need to get in a bit closer.
PROJECTION
(zooms in to a picture of a church)
Doc: Ahhh... that's better, I see you've been fairly regular at church.
Christian: Yes, I'm there most Sundays - good teaching... I learn a lot.
Doc: Excellent (picture changes to Bible) And you've been reading the Bible regularly.
Christian: Yeah, I read it as often as I can, there's some great stuff in there!
Doc: Well..... (Picture changes to praying hands) This is excellent, you've been praying
as well...
Christian: I try to do my bit - you know pray for our missionaries and so on.
Doc: Well, everything looks in fairly good shape up here.... Now let's take a look
at the heart.
Christian: Heart.... what's that got to do with what I'm thinking.
Doc: Ahhh... Remember I said thinking AND feeling. Your head tells us what you know
and understand - and God wants us to learn and grow, but He also expects us to tell
others about Jesus - both here and all around the world. This will tell us if you
really have a heart which wants to reach out to others... a heart for missions.
Christian: Oh..... Ok.....
Doc: (moves instrument down to heart) Now let's see what your feeling....
PROJECTION
of word which come up on screen and then fade off: "I'm scared of witnessing" &
"I'm too busy" & "I'm comfortable where I am" & "I don't want to leave my friends"
& "I can't afford to give to missions" & "I look bad in a beige safari suit" &
"I hope God calls someone else".
Doc: (mutters some " hmms" and "uhuh's" as this is all going on then finally says)
"I see..."
Christian: So, how's the old ticker check out?
Doc: Well..... it's a little hard for me to explain..... perhaps you should take a
look at your heart yourself.
Christian: But... I don't have one of those innerscope things.
Doc: Ahh... you see I NEED ONE to see into YOUR heart, but Christian, YOU can take
a good look at YOUR OWN heart ... any time you want.
